![]() When I was training to be a counsellor we were asked to choose between two different counselling approaches: Petrūska Clarkson’s five relationship model and Els van Ooijen and Ariana Faris’s relational integrative model. We studied both – and both have enriched my practice – but the idea was to select one of them and make it our own. This single undulating sentence was what made me commit to Petrūska. It came out of a 480-page red book which, on the surface, didn’t invite such devotion but it sang to me. It invites the reader to drop all rationality (never a bad thing where therapy is concerned) and fall headlong into the poetry of therapeutic relationship. The ‘ancient rocks and oceanic rhythms’ speak of mystery, interconnection, and depth. Every time I read these words I fall in love with therapy again.
