Focusing
Focusing is a gentle, simple self-care practice. It offers a way to gently connect with your body's inner wisdom.
In the 60s, a philosopher called Eugene Gendlin was working with one of the founders of humanistic psychology, Carl Rogers, to try to get to the bottom of why therapy works for some people and not others.
He discovered that therapeutic change came down to a person's ability to connect with how their body experiences a situation. He found this revelation so important that he set about developing a technique so that people could actively tune in to their inner world.
Eugene Gendlin would say that he did not discover focusing because it is something that we are all able to do naturally.
For instance, if you once worked for a boss that scared you, left the company and then bumped into her years later, your heart might race, or your stomach churn. Your body would automatically give you a direct picture of what that person was like for you over time. We do this with every person and every situation. Connecting more deeply and deliberately with these messages and learning to trust them is what focusing is all about.
This is something that you can learn to do. To find out more, please get in touch.
